How Do We Keep Your Belongings Safe in Storage?

When you hand over the contents of a home, a business or just years of accumulation, you are placing a significant amount of trust in a storage provider. At SO Storage, that trust is supported by four layers of protection operating simultaneously: 24-hour CCTV monitoring, an individual alarm for every unit, PIN-code access control unique to each customer, and a rapid response alarm service.

Sitting alongside all of that is a bespoke protection policy that covers what physical security systems cannot.

Here’s a detailed context of what they do, why each matters, and what they mean for you on a practical level when you leave your unit locked and drive home.

Self-storage units

24-Hour CCTV Monitoring

Our CCTV system covers the facility continuously, every hour of every day. There is no shift change, no gap between closing time and the morning. The cameras monitor access points, corridors and the site perimeter – the areas where any attempt to gain unauthorised access would first have to pass through.

Two factors make CCTV effective rather than merely symbolic. First, it acts as a deterrent. Clear, comprehensive camera coverage signals that activity is being monitored and recorded, discouraging many individuals from engaging in misconduct in the first place.

Second, it records. If anything does happen, the footage provides a clear, timestamped account that supports any claim, police report or insurance process.

At SO Storage, our CCTV connects to our rapid response alarm monitoring system, which means unusual activity does not sit unnoticed on a hard drive – it triggers a response.

Individual Unit Alarms

A building-level alarm protects the perimeter. An individual unit alarm protects your specific room. If someone with a valid PIN to the building attempts to access a unit that is not theirs, the alarm in that room triggers independently. Your belongings are not sharing their security with every other unit on the site.

The alarm is tied to your personal PIN code. You arm and disarm it. No one else can. That chain of control extends from the front gate to the door of your room, and it stays yours for as long as you stay with us.

Storing valuable or irreplaceable items?

See our homeowner storage and business storage pages for guidance on what we can accommodate.

PIN-Code Access Control

Access to our facilities is controlled by a unique PIN code, issued to each customer individually. You do not share it. There is no master PIN in circulation among unrelated customers, and no generic code that bypasses the individual unit system.

This design addresses one of the most common weaknesses in any access control system: shared credentials.

Every access event at SO Storage is associated with a specific, traceable code. If you need yours changed at any point, our team can arrange it.

Rapid Response Capability

Security systems are most effective when they support timely action, rather than simply recording events after they occur. At SO Storage, our CCTV monitoring and alarm systems are designed to help facilitate a rapid response when unusual activity or unauthorised access is detected.

This active element is what elevates security beyond a purely passive approach. Rather than relying solely on recorded footage or alarm notifications, the combination of continuous CCTV coverage, individual unit alarms, and monitored site activity helps ensure potential issues can be identified and addressed promptly.

The speed of response matters. Visible CCTV, individually alarmed units and robust access controls work together to deter opportunistic intrusion before it escalates.

For many would-be intruders, a facility with multiple layers of active security represents a significantly less attractive target.

For businesses storing stock, equipment or important documents, this capability is particularly valuable. An incident identified and responded to during the early stages can reduce the potential for loss, minimise operational disruption and support any subsequent investigation or insurance process.

Site-Level Security and Regulatory Compliance

Beyond the systems assigned to each unit, our facilities comply with all applicable building and fire safety regulations.

That compliance covers fire detection and suppression provisions, electrical safety and the structural standards expected of a commercial storage environment.

Fire is the event most people do not think about when they think about storage security, but it is one of the most significant risks to physical belongings. Our regulatory compliance for the facility itself is built and maintained to reduce that risk, and our protection policy ensures your belongings are covered even if the worst occurs.

Lighting, controlled site access and perimeter integrity also play a role in the security of the wider site. Together, these site-level factors make opportunistic intrusion difficult and conspicuous.

Protection Coverage – What Physical Security Cannot Prevent

Security systems protect against people. Protection policies protect against everything else.

Extreme weather, lightning, arson, flooding and pest damage can all threaten stored belongings regardless of how comprehensive the CCTV system is.

That is why SO storage arranges a bespoke protection policy for your goods, underwritten by RSA and placed through Reason Global, specialist brokers who focus specifically on the self-storage industry. This is not a standard household insurance add-on. It is a policy written for storage, by people who understand what gets stored and what the real risks are.

The policy covers:

If you hold an existing policy that covers self-storage, we are happy to accept proof of cover from another provider, though we cannot advise on whether it replicates the breadth of our arrangements.

What This Means for You, Day to Day

The practical result of everything above is this: you can close the door to your unit, enter your PIN, and leave knowing that your specific room is individually alarmed, the site is under continuous camera monitoring, any alarm event triggers an active response rather than a passive log, and your belongings are backed by a named protection policy against events that physical systems cannot stop.

That reassurance does not thin out between visits. Whether you come once a week or once every three months, the same systems are running when you are not there.

Whether you are decluttering before a house move, storing business stock or archiving documents during an office relocation, the security provision does not change based on what you store or how long you stay. Every customer, every unit, every day.
